Tier 1 or Tier 2 storage for OS on esxi 5.0 datastores

Hello folks,

We are currently reviewing how our SAN is allocated. We're using Infortrend EVSA F70 FC heads and ESVA J60-230 JBOD's.

We have a smaller tier1 pool (2X logical drives of 7X 15K 600GB SAS disks in RAID 6 added to a single pool to create 6.73TB. This is then split into 6 virtual volumes between 600GB and 900GB each which are presented via fibre to our 7 esxi hosts and formatted with VMFS.)

We also have a larger tier2 pool (1X logical drive of 15X 7.2K 3TB SATA drives in RAID 6 in a single pool to create 21TB. This is then split in multiple virtual volumes each which are presented via fibre to our 7 esxi hosts and formatted with VMFS.)

Will there be a notable performance difference in using the tier1 storage over the tier2 for the operating systems of the virtual machines on the data stores or with the amount of disks in the pool is it negligible? Obviously things like databases need to be kept on tier1 but I would like to know if we can use the slower disks for virtual OS without a noticeable performance hit.

Regards

A
