Poor Performance on 8Disk Raid 10

Hi Everyone,

Firstly if I've put this in the wrong place, apologies!

I currently have an ESXI 5.1 whitebox setup at home which includes a LSI 9240-8i SAS/SATA raid card with 8x2TB Seagate SATA drives in RAID10.

Rest of my spec is as follows:

Supermirco x9-SRA workstaton motherboard

64GB DDR3 ECC Samsung RAM

E5-1650

It has been running apolsutely fine with around 8VMs running (mainly server 2008r2, one SQL server). However I've recently noticed VMs running sluggishly- as a result i've run HD Tune Pro on one my VM's and this is the result:

To me this looks prety bad! IOPS for 4KB random are terrible and the way the read speed graphs keep dipping down to 0 indcates that potentially there could (probably is!) an issue with the way i've set it up.

In all honesty I have done very litte the diagnose this so far. Just wondering if anyone could point me in a general direction to troubleshoot this?

so far i've simply checked the RAID state to see if there are any dirves that have gone bad (seems to be fine)

I've also shutdown all VM's apart from 2- 1 being my pfsense box and the other being the box i've run the test from which is Win2008r2 with basic ADDS/DNS/DHCP installed on it.

It's definately worth noting that this RAID card is rather a cheap one, it includes no onboard battery or cache (which is why I went for RAID10 as there is no parity information). I can't remember if i've set this as Write-through or Write-back so I will certainly look at this!

many thanks

Tom
