ESX 5.5 datastore on SSD gives poor performance

Hi,

I have seen a strange behavior that maybe somebody can explain:

I have a PCI-E SSD which when attached to a physical windows server gives about 400K IOPS.

When using the same SSD on ESX 5.5 windows vm (attached as RDM or on a datastore) I'm getting Max of 70K IOPS.

attaching this PCI SSD as a passthrough to the windows vm I'm getting again 400K IOPS.

When I used 4 windows VM all had a disk placed on the SSD datastore, the Max of 70K IOPS was devided by those VM's. each vm got about 18K IOPS.

could someone explain this huge performance reduction?

BTW - I have checked this on two Vendor of PCI SSD

Regards,

David
