Re: Safest way to delete storage

Thank you Radek. To be very honest, I am still a bit confused. I have read some blogs tonight that suggest deleting a datastore in VCenter can still cause an APD. To me that does not make any sense. I have deleted Datastores in the past in VCenter, then told my Array to not present them to my clusters anymore, then re-scanned the Hosts. All seemed well. Now I am concerned from reading blogs I may have left lingering traces.

This blog confuses me:

Detaching a datastore or storage device from multiple ESXi 5.0 hosts | VMware vSphere Blog - VMware Blogs

The comments below in the blog, I do not understand Cormac response(unless I have a bad meaning of what former and latter mean):

So in ESXi 5.0 what does simply right clicking on an empty datastore object and selecting Delete do that is different from unmounting and detaching?

When is the Delete option meant to be used?

  1. Cormac HoganApril 11, 2013 at 6:45 amThe former would be for when you want to physically remove a device from a host – the latter would be for when you want to ‘delete’ the contents of a device, but leave it attached to the host for future use.
