All,
I'm trying to get iSCSI setup in my environment. We purchased a Western Digital device that runs Windows Storage server for around $900. We configured both network adapters in it with IP addresses on our data network and connected it to a layer 2 switch which is also part of our data network. We have a limited budget so we do not have layer 3 switches. Therefore this iSCSI channel is on the same infrastructure albeit directly connected to the switch that the servers are connected to. We then proceeded to configure a dedicated NIC on the Vmware server 5.5 for iSCSI. However, we are constantly getting disconnected and our network is going down. I realize there are some bad practices in place but since I have a production server on this I have to come up with a solution.
Should I directly connect the Western Digital device to the iSCSI NIC to eliminate any congestion for a more reliable connection temporarily?
Is the problem that the iSCSI device is on the same subnet as the data network?
If I were to change it would these problems go away?
Would it be as simple as just purchasing another cheap layer 2 gigabit swtich and connecting only iSCSI to it?
I need a fast solution any help would be appreciated.
