Storage Migration - More Space Used Than Files Shown

I've been searching for a post that is similar to this and been coming up emtpy handed. If this has been covered somewhere else please feel free to point me there.

Our company is running 3 Dell hosts with Essentials Plus 5.1, we have let our maintenance lapse since. The storage is a HP Lefthand SAN with approx 12TB of space after RAID 10 overhead.

The SAN does not support UNMAP. 1.5 years ago HP said they were working getting the unit compliant with VMWare tools, but I found a work around and had been using that for the last 3 years.

My work around consists of creating a new volume on the SAN and in the VMWare Client migrating from one datastore to the new datastore, then delete the old datastore. On average I gain about 500GB to 1.5TB from each move. We have 4 volumes total that we use on the SAN.

Problem I am seeing today is that my work around isn't working. I have one volume that contains only 1 vmServer. This server is our file server. According to the files that are in the directory in the volume we have 1.9 TB of total space being used. However today when migrating the volume to a new volume the data is not shrinking.

The old volume was consuming 3.49TB. When migrating the new volume is using the same amount of space and not shrinking like it normally does.

I did two other volumes over the last two days and reclaimed about 2TB. This one is just being stubborn.

Does this make sense to anyone?

Thank you for any assistance you can provide.
