With an older storage array, I create LUNs based on the kinds of disks that back the LUNs. I could make my SAS backed LUNs gold, my sata backed LUNs to be bronze, etc. and then use Profile Driven Storage to match VMs with the kind of storage they need.
However, now some of the functionality of moving data to be stored on different tiers is being done on the array itself, such as with VMAX and FAST. Now a LUN isn't permanently tied to one set of performance characteristics on the Array side.
How does this affect the initial provisioning of LUNs when I'm using Profile- Driven Storage? How should tiering in VMware, done by profile driven storage, and tiering on the storage array side be done together? Should they be used together?
