Our Windows User volume is getting ready to run out of space (Our company doesn't believe in disk quotas - or spending money). I've got to find a way to expand or split our user data since we're running into the 2TB limit. I'm considering three options:
Expand the datastore using an extent on another LUN.
Span the disk in windows across two vmdks in separate datastores.
Build a second user directory on a new disk and splitting up the users between them using an AD group and the login script.
Here's our environment:
VSphere 5.0, ESXi 5.0 (so >2TB datastores are possible)
EVA 4100 San, Fiber (so >2TB LUNS are not possible)
SAN doesn't support VAAI
Everything is VMFS
None of the options really seem great to me, but I'm leaning towards the Extent. I don't like Windows spanning in general... trusting Windows on this doesn't give me a warm fuzzy. I hear bad things about extents, buit I'm not seeing a lot of details. Splitting the users up would be a ton of work even in our 500 user environment.
Any links to supporting data would be appreciated... I have to explain it to my boss who's an old AS400 admin.
Of the three options above, which would you go with? Does anyone have any other ideas?
Thanks
