Re: Snapshots on storage
I just realised these new questions came from the same original poster of that other thread, I would reverse the "branch" action but the forum system doesn't have that function.
Re: Snapshots on storage
The topic was discussed, but new questions arose.

OK!
Re: Locked files - VMFS 6
Hi Ulli
I have the same issue. I moved a VM from a 6.0.0 cluster to a standalone ESXi 6.7U2.
Any help appreciated.

Re: Locked files - VMFS 6
Hi Marc
you were able to move a VM and then have locked files in the new environment ?
thats strange and unexpected ...
please create a header dump and send it myway so that I can look into it.

DR Orchestration for vVols
I have setup virtual volume for array based replication, want to orchestrate the failover(planned and unplanned). I find references only to PowerCLI cmdlets(example: Start-SpbmReplicationFailover).
Are there any other programmable interface other than PowerCLI cmdlets, to orchestrate DR failover.
Re: DR Orchestration for vVols
PowerCLI cmdlets are only invoking the SOAP API, so if you'd rather go to that directly you certainly can. But, AFAIK, this is not available in the REST API just yet.
Re: HP P2000 G3 SAS Multipath Configuration with Vmware HOSTS
Hi
Is this happened on all of your 3 ESXi hosts? (losing connectivity on failover operation between SAN storage controllers)
When everything is ok (before required to failover) did you check the 2nd controller is operating normally?! Did you check the P2000 event logs especially in time of failover!?
Please run the following command before and after failover between the SAN controllers:
esxcli storage core device list
Space allocation on NetApp LUN
Hello,
I am wondering if anyone else is experiencing this issue.
Short facts about our system:
- NetApp AFF220 IP-Metrocluster (ONTAP 9.6 P3)
- VMware ESXi 6.7 U3
- Thin provisioned LUNs with space allocation disabled
Problem is:
- Space reclaim is not working properly
How the issue gets visible:
- When I use storage vmotion to migrate a machine with approx 50% unique data from A to B, no space is getting free on the source volume
How I can work around this problem:
- Enable space allocation on this LUN, then suddenly the space will get reclaimed
Why this is weird:
- We never created our LUNs other than as recommended by NetApp. Plus we need space allocation as a protection function if the LUN runs out of space.
Is anyone else experiencing this problem?
Best regards and thanks
Alex

Re: Space allocation on NetApp LUN
space allocation needs to be turned of for iscsi unmap to work, so if its not on the space doesn't get reclaimed.
Re: Space allocation on NetApp LUN
Thank you for your reply!
That's exactly it, it's disabled everywhere but the space is not being reclaimed.
Due to us running into an emergency, we had to enable space allocation on one LUN, then space was getting freed up. On the other LUNs we still have the same problem: Unmapping is not working.
Re: Space allocation on NetApp LUN
Sorry that was a typo, it needs to be turned on not off, look at
"If your host supports SCSI thin provisioning, you can enable the space-allocation option in ONTAP to turn on automatic host-side space management."
A general runtime error when configuring Dell SC series live volume on vcenter appliance 6.7
I have an environment that consists of 3 hosts and 1 SC5020F storage center. The DR site is also similarly kitted out. When running the live volume configuration wizard, everything is fine, I can see my SC5020F and all its configured volumes.
The problem I am having is that I end up with a "A general runtime error occurred" in the Recent Tasks tab. I am stumped as to what could be the issue.
That's the screenshot of the process failure. I hope its visible enough.
Any help would be highly appreciated.
Re: A general runtime error when configuring Dell SC series live volume on vcenter appliance 6.7
You're going to have to go find logs that capture more information. This isn't enough to say anything. As for where those logs are, I'm sure Dell has a KB.

Re: VMs Crashing on NFS Storage ... ESXi Kernel Log flodded with messages
Hey DanP ... sorry I haven't logged in for a while. It ended up that the storage device didn't support NFS 4.1 under ESXi ... or at least that we could tell. Using NFS v3 seems to be the solution and native plugin. We also significantly reduced load over time from the NAS device which initially made us think it was just overloaded ... but alas ... changing protocol was the biggest help.
