We are revising out storage configuration with new ESXi5.5 allowing up to 62TB VMDK , and would like you opinion about this for a special application we host .
OS > Datastores we always keep 10 % and size 2 TB Luns ( on Tier one disk )
DATA > We have large VMs here , and our arrays can carve up to 15 TB luns , giving us 15 TB VMFS volumes , with something like 14.9 TB VMDK s on them .
We will never snapshot or clone these big VMs, and rely on Agent based File level backups in the Guest ( conventional backups )
Can we make our VMDK 14.9 TB , considering that ZZ.Dumps , VMware.log , vPAGEFILE and all "trash" files will be created where the vmx file lives , in this case the OS 2 TB luns with appropriate 10% free space per lun?
Can you guys foresee any reason why we cannot basically use the entire VMFS volume for this special case ?
If so , we will go for almost MAX vmdk per lun for Data disks , and span then inside the Windows Guest
for DR replication we do not want to use VMFS extends .
