Hello,
I am trying to prepare for testing Virtual SAN in my home lab and am attempting to use inexpensive Seagate Series 600 SSD's for the SSD requirement. Here's a summary of my lab environment:
Servers: 3 x ProLiant dl380 g5
VMware: vSphere 5.5 U1 for HP servers
I inserted the SSD in one of the servers using a standard HP Universal Disk Drive carrier and booted using the SmartStart CD. The ACU saw the SSD and allowed me to create the LUN as normal.
Next, I booted ESXi normally and observed in the viclient->configuration->storage adapters->devices screen that the SSD was visible, but recognized it as a Non-SSD device. I found instructions in this VMware KB article for enabling the SSD option on the device and performed the following steps:
Run this command and identify the device to be tagged and its SATP:# esxcli storage nmp device list
Run this command to add a PSA claim rule to mark the device as SSD:# esxcli storage nmp satp rule add --satp=SATP_TYPE --device=naa.ID --option="enable_ssd"
In my case, I issued this command:# esxcli storage nmp satp rule add --satp=VMW_SATP_CX --device=mpx.vmhba1:C0:T3:L0 --option="enable_ssd"
I rebooted and that is when the problem began. The device was no longer visible in the viclient->configuration->storage adapters->devices screen. A quick look at the paths on the same screen shows that the path was marked as Dead. Here's a screenshot:
Does anyone have an idea how to make this device un-Dead and get back on the path to Virtual SAN (pun intended)?
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.
Jeff
