Space Issue during migration
Folks, I am migrating VMs from a 950 GB store to another 950 GB store of VNX.After migrating close to half of VMs I see that the source DS is 476 GB free and destination DS is 263 GB free. That means I...

I need to expand the DS from 1 TB to 1.5 TB.If I increase the LUN size from the storage instead of deploying a new LUN, will the datastore size increase on the fly on the vcenter side after a rescan?...

Like with each file system, you need to resize the VMFS filesystem (i.e. the datastore) after increasing the LUN size. With vSphere 4.0 and newer this can be done from within the datastore's...

You still need make some procedures after the rescan, check this KB article for details: Growing or expanding a VMFS volume or datastore (1017662)

What was the free space before starting migration on both datastore?

Thanks for your responses. Is growing the DS and adding an extent the same? -Rahul
View ArticleRe: DS size
Extent & growing are not sameThis explained here nicely :http://professionalvmware.com/2009/08/safe-and-natural-vmfs-enlargement-extend-or-grow-vmfs-and-why-you-should-care/

Did you selected "Same format as the Source" during migration ? Cause if disks was thin at source and converted to thick on the destination, then you will need more space.

To give you some info-The initial size of the LUN was 950 GB. Now it has been expanded to 2048 GB from the SAN end.Is the limitation of ESXI4.0 of maximum LUN size of 2 TB-512Bytes acting up here?-Rahul

That's likely the issue. If the storage system works with base-2 sizes (i.e. the real sizes rather than the base-10 marketing stuff) you may not be able to resize the datastore. André

Thanks AndréCan you please shed some more light on this base-2 sizes of storage systems-Rahul
