in my environment I have a storage array Dell MD3620f and two ESXi clusters: one 4.1 and one 5.5. I need to have shared VMFS3 storage between these clusters. The problem is that my storage array doesn't let me configure the mapping so only one certain LUN is shared, but I need to share all LUNs from the array so effectively the 4.1 hosts will "see" also VMFS5 datastores. I've seen another cluster with this configuration, and the 4.1 hosts see the storage device but do not detect any VMFS partition on it - so works as I would expect as 4.1 doesn't understand VMFS5.
My question is: Is this configuration safe? Can you show me any docs/KB which describes the ESXi behaviour in such configuration? I've heard some opinions that vmfs reformatting can happen. Can anyone confirm this? Thanks.
