Safest way to do it is to give another share with required datastore space, storage vMotion all the VM's into the new datastore and then delete the older one. Way better than risking data loss

The solution turned out to be how the LUN was mapped. After switching to Explicit mapping, the Recovery and Reprotect worked normally.
