vSA RAID configuration and disk-types

hey guys!

in vsphere-storage-appliance-511-release-notes vmWare says that there is actually no support for RAID 1 and only limited support for SATA3 disks.

i would like to know whether someone of you has had tested RAID1 configuration and SATA3 disks or not. in vSphere <4 i think there was no official support for SATA drives, too.

i know that vmWare wants me to use RAID 5, 6 or 10 and SAS disks for better performance results, but i would like to know how big that improvement is.

i want to use vSA to enable HA features without buying a SAN (two SANs -> single point of failure). the two cluster nodes will host 2 VMs with shares, DBs and mail system and a couple of really small VMs (e.g. CTI Server and AIRLeader Control). a third dedicated server will host vSA stand alone service. this machine is also used as backup target (VM -> backup server -> LTO5). there will be less then 25 users.

maybe someone has got an answer for me?

edit: is there support for more than one vsad? i like to use 3x600GB SAS RAID5 and 2x2TB SATA RAID1 per node

cheers!

roland
