Assuming its a 4+4 RAID10 set, the number of IOPS is pretty ok considering a single SATA disk can do 80 IOPS.Just add more and more disks till your satisfied.

You have reason but also the VMXNET3 drivers are not included by default in windows OS, but VMware strongly reccomands to use this NIC, the reccomandasion is not the same with the PVSCSI controller.
